Storm Knocks Out Route 37 Traffic Signals, 4K Homes In Toms River

More than 20,000 homes were without power across Ocean County, including Beachwood, South Toms River and Toms River.

Powerful thunderstorms moving through Ocean County have knocked out power to traffic signals along Route 37 and to dozens of homes in South Toms River and Beachwood on Thursday.

Nearly 850 homes in South Toms River and more than 1,400 in Beachwood were without electricity as a result as well.

The Ocean County Sheriff's Department issued a Nixle alert about the traffic signals on Route 37 to alert motorists; more than 4,300 homes were without power in Toms River, according to Jersey Central Power and Light.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected to continue through the evening across Ocean County.
