Wolfie's In Toms River Not Closing, Just Seeking A Buyer: Owner

Stuart Wolf says they've been looking to sell the Toms River diner for a couple of years and turned to social media to get the word out.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — When Wolfie's Deli and Restaurant first opened in 1968, going to the diner for a meal was considered a treat. In the 50 years since Stuart's father first opened the restaurant, much has changed. Including the clientele of diners.

"Kids don't hang out at diners anymore," Wolf said Friday in response to questions about his plans for the Route 37 restaurant. In a post on Facebook, Wolf said the family is seeking to sell the restaurant and take a new direction in life.

"We would like to take the time to thank every one of you for coming along our journey of 50 amazing years! It has been an honor serving you and we very much appreciate your business," he wrote. "We have decided that is it time to take our next chapter in our lives as we are selling our restaurant."

Wolf said some people interpreted the post as meaning they are closing the restaurant, but he said that is not the case.

"Tastes have changed," he said. "Our menu caters to seniors, and we need a new product. I'm not willing to reinvent myself."

"If I was younger, I might. Twenty years ago we moved (from where the Shoprite is on Route 37) and spent $300,000 remodeling," said Wolf, who's 60. "I'm not willing to do that again. I just don't have the time, the energy or the want to do it."

The search for a buyer has been going on for two years, Wolf said, but so far no one has spoken up. So they took the message to social media in hopes of finding someone who might be willing to buy the property.

Wolf said he doesn't have a deadline in mind; he's hoping someone will step up to buy soon, however.

"We're not losing money; we're just not making money like we used to," he said.

Interested buyers should call him at 732-330-2575.
