Cedar Grove: Allegedly Drunk Clifton Man Crashes Head On into NJ Transit Bus

"Numerous" empty beer cans found strewn about vehicle, say police.

An allegedly drunk Clifton man crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and hit a NJ Transit Bus “head on” late Tuesday night, according to authorities.

Following the crash, Alejandro Ramos, 23, of Clifton, was placed under arrest on charges of Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving and Assault By Auto.

According to Cedar Grove Police, as officers interviewed Ramos after the crash, they observed “numerous empty beer cans strewn about his vehicle and detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, along with signs of impairment.”

Investigation revealed Ramos was traveling southbound on Pompton Avenue near Cedar Street when his vehicle, a 2000 Honda Civic, crossed over into the northbound lane of traffic and struck the bus head on, stated police.

Ramos was subsequently placed under arrest for DWI and transported to Mountainside Hospital for treatment of a neck and arm injury. The 46 year-old bus driver was also transported to Mountainside for treatment of a leg injury. Neither injury was considered to be life threatening, stated police.

Due to the involved injuries, Ramos was charged with Assault By Auto due to him being under the influence, stated police. Following processing, Ramos was released at the hospital pending a Superior Court Arraignment in Newark on March 11.
