Cedar Grove: Apartment Fire Renders Unit 'Uninhabitable'

An Essex County woman, her husband and their dogs safely escaped a home fire at Meadowbrook Garden Apartments on Monday morning.

An apartment fire on Monday morning at the Meadowbrook Garden Apartments on Pompton Avenue rendered the unit “uninhabitable,” but the residents and their two dogs managed to safely escape.

According to the Cedar Grove Police Department, the resident reported that she was awakened around 5 a.m. by the smell of smoke. After seeing the smoky condition of the apartment, she called 911 and escaped the apartment along with her husband and dogs.

Cedar Grove emergency workers arrived to find smoke emanating from multiple second floor windows and proceeded to evacuate the building. Meanwhile, firefighters made entry into the apartment and extinguished the flames.

The apartment sustained significant smoke and water damage and was declared uninhabitable, reported authorities.

No injuries were reported, and the other residents of the building were later allowed to return to their apartments.

The fire is not being considered as suspicious and preliminary investigation indicates it may have been electrical in nature, stated authorities.
