Cedar Grove Firefighters Extinguish Hilltop Reservation Brush Fire

Improperly extinguished campfire blamed for blaze put out by Cedar Grove firefighters Sunday.

Cedar Grove firefighters Sunday extinguished a small brush fire on the Hilltop Reservation, officials said Monday.

An official with the Essex County Sheriff’s Office said a passing motorist spotted smoke coming from the reservation and called police on April 28.

The Essex County Sheriff's Office sent an officer to the reservation while Cedar Grove firefighters were called to put out the fire.

“It was a small camp fire that was not properly extinguished,” officials in the Cedar Grove police department said.

Hilltop Reservation is owned by Essex County and no camping or campfires are allowed on the premises, officials said.
