Police Activity Aug. 15-22.

The following reports were generated by the Cedar Grove Police and do not indicate convictions.

On Tuesday, August 16th., a Sunrise Terrace resident reported an incident of theft. The victim reported that some unknown person(s) entered his parked vehicle sometime during the overnight hours and removed a mobile Global Positioning System (GPS) from the car. The value of the stolen GPS was $150.00. * Residents are urged to secure all valuables and to lock and alarm their motor vehicles when unattended.

On Tuesday, August 16th. at 9:23 p.m., police arrested a Montclair woman on charges that she was operating a vehicle bearing a suspended registration, in addition to operating while her NJ driving privileges were under suspension. The 40 year-old defendant, Enejan G. Berdiyeva, was processed on the charges at police headquarters and released pending a Municipal Court appearance. The defendant’s vehicle, a 2004 Toyota, was impounded. Ptl. Joseph Russomanno was the arresting officer.

On Thursday, August 18th. at 3:18 a.m., Ptl. Jason Wolfstirn initiated a motor vehicle stop for an observed violation. A subsequent investigation revealed the operator’s NY driving privileges were under suspension. The 33 year-old defendant, Andrea C. Veliz of the Bronx, NY, was cited for the violation and released pending a Municipal Court appearance.

On Thursday, August 18th. at 2:49 p.m., police arrested an Orange man on a theft charge after he was found to be in possession of a NJ Dealer License Plate that was reported stolen to the Union Police on June 29, 2011. The 23 year-old defendant, Andrew J. Hall, was processed at police headquarters and released pending a Municipal Court appearance. Ptl. John Smigelsky was the arresting officer.

On Thursday, August 18th. at 8:06 p.m., police responded to Stevens Avenue on a report of an injured deer. Upon arrival, police discovered that the deer had apparently been hit by a motor vehicle that had since left the scene. Due to the severe injuries suffered by the deer, it was necessary for police to destroy the animal. * Due to the large deer population in the area, motorists are urged to use caution when operating near wooded areas, especially between dusk and dawn.

On Sunday, August 21st., police arrested a Township man on CDS marijuana possession and distribution charges. The arrest of 19 year-old Paul R. Amorosi Jr. followed a 2:08 a.m. motor vehicle stop made by Ptl. Dominick Buscio for an observed motor vehicle violation. As the officer was securing Amorosi’s driving credentials, he detected the odor of burning marijuana emanating from the passenger compartment and observed the defendant attempting to secrete a bag that appeared to contain marijuana. A subsequent investigation resulted in the discovery of marijuana in a larger plastic bag, in addition to marijuana packaged in smaller bags. Police also discovered a digital scale, and seized $928.00 in cash believed to be related to the sale of marijuana. Amorosi was additionally charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and with using a Controlled Dangerous Substance. The defendant was processed on all charges and released pending a Superior Court Arraignment on August 31, 2011.

On Monday, August 22nd. at 7:14 a.m., police responded to a Beverly Road address on a report of a motor vehicle theft. The residents reported that sometime during the overnight hours, some unknown person(s) had stolen their 2010 Cadillac SRX from their driveway. The vehicle was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer as stolen and the vehicle equipped OnStar System was activated. OnStar was able to provide the location for the stolen vehicle which was subsequently recovered unoccupied in Newark. The detective bureau is conducting a follow-up investigation into the incident.
