Snow blower theft, car strikes deer

Editor’s Note: The following incidents are taken directly from the Cedar Grove police blotter, which may not include the full scope of police activity in the area. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

On Thursday, March 12, the owner of a West Caldwell landscaping company reported the theft of a snow blower from a trailer being stored in a Pompton Avenue parking lot. The victim reported the theft occurred between March 7th. and March 12th., when some unknown suspect(s) forcibly entered the trailer and removed an orange Ariens Snow Blower 926e. The snow blower, valued at $1,000, was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer as stolen.

On Thursday, March 12, at 10:22 p.m., police arrested an East Orange man on charges he was operating a motor vehicle bearing a suspended NJ registration while his NJ driving privileges were under suspension. The 21 year-old defendant, Akbar A. English, was processed on the charges at police headquarters and released pending a Municipal Court appearance. The defendant’s vehicle, a 2003 Honda, was impounded. Ptl. Raymond Cassella was the investigating officer.

On Friday, March 13, at 7:14 a.m., police responded to the area of Stevens Avenue & E. Lindsley Road on a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a deer. Upon arrival, police discovered the badly injured deer in the roadway. Due to the deer’s severe injuries, it was necessary for police to destroy the animal. The involved vehicle left the scene prior to police arrival. Due to the large deer population in the area, motorists are urged to use caution when operating near wooded areas, especially between dusk and dawn.

On Friday, March 13, at 9:31 p.m., Ptl. Jason Wolfstirn initiated a motor vehicle stop for an observed violation. A subsequent investigation revealed the vehicle operator was unlicensed and his NJ driving privileges were under suspension. The 31 year-old operator, Mario Palacios of Dover, was arrested on the charges, processed at police headquarters and released pending a Municipal Court appearance.

On Sunday, March 15, at 11:05 p.m., Lt. Erik Hansson initiated a motor vehicle stop for observed violations. A subsequent check of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) computer revealed the operator’s driving privileges were under suspension. The 24 year-old operator, Mohammod Parves of Paterson, was arrested on the charge, processed at police headquarters and released pending a Municipal Court appearance.
