Cedar Grove Police Nab Bank Thief

West New York man who stole misplaced envelope containing $1,000 captured after police study surveillance video.

Cedar Grove police have arrested a 34-year-old West New York man who grabbed a Newark woman’s misplaced envelope containing $1,000 in cash left at a local bank.

Police said they used bank video surveillance to arrest Alain Aviles-Tamayo July 17 after he was identified as the person who picked up the envelope with the woman’s cash.

The woman had left the envelope on a table inside the Bank of America on Pompton Avenue and discovered the money and envelope missing when she returned, police said.

Aviles-Tamayo had just completed his own transaction at the bank prior to the theft when the video shows him picking up the envelope and leaving the bank.

He was processed and released pending Superior Court arraignment in Newark.
