Cedar Grove Students Practice Kindness, Take Up National Challenge

Cedar Grove, NJ – Among math and reading lessons is another vital subject for students to practice… kindness.

From Jan. 25 to 29, students at Memorial Middle School in Cedar Grove participated in The Great Kindness Challenge, an annual nationwide effort aimed at creating a “culture of kindness” in the local community.

“During the week of January 25-29, students will be performing as many kind acts as possible and will have a special spirit week,” Cedar Grove school administrators stated on the district website.

This isn’t the first year that MMS students participated in the effort; the group received a $1,000 award to continue their cause of spreading cheer after their participation in 2013.

During the national event, students focus on performing good deeds from a 50-item checklist that includes actions such as:

  • Smile at 25 people
  • Do a household chore without being asked
  • Pick up trash in your neighborhood
  • Make a new friend
  • Say “hi” to a homeless person
  • Leave a flower on someone’s doorstep
  • Walk or bike instead of driving
  • Hold the door open for someone
  • Compliment five people
