Police: Woman Hit Boyfriend With Car

Apparent dispute between couple from Pennsylvania results in hospitalization, arrest.

An apparent lovers' quarrel between a couple from Pennsylvania has landed a woman in police custody, and her boyfriend in the hospital, Cedar Grove Police said Sunday.

The Pennsylvania man, whose identity was not released, was hospitalized early Sunday after police say his girlfriend intentionally drove her car into him during a dispute while driving on Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove early Sunday morning, police said.

The injuries to the 26-year-old man from Emmaus, Penn. are not life-threatening, according to Cedar Grove Police Chief Richard Vanderstreet.

Charlene G. Cook, 23, also of Emmaus, was arrested on charges of second-degree aggravated assault and possession of a weapon, her car, Vanderstreet said.

Ptl. Robert McDermott and Lt. Michael Orsulak responded to a 9-1-1 call made by the victim’s sister at 4:18 a.m. Sunday morning to what was reported as a hit-and-run at the intersection of Pompton Avenue and Grissing Court.

“Initially, they were representing that it was a hit and run involving a dark colored SUV,” Vanderstreet said. But the physical evidence at the scene did not support that, he said.

When they arrived, the victim was outside the car with his sister who had been traveling with the couple.

Vanderstreet said the car, a 2007 Hyundai, was in motion during the apparent dispute between the boyfriend and girlfriend. The man got out of the car and apparently the “defendant had intentionally struck the victim with the car,” said the chief.

The victim was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson where he was undergoing surgery for a compound fracture to his right leg on Sunday.

Cook was being held on $10,000 bail and remained in custody at the Cedar Grove Police station as of 1 p.m. Sunday.

The incident remains under investigation.
