In Verona: Pedestrian Injury, Stolen Exhaust Fan, Burst Pipes, Fallen Tree Limb, Identity Theft

Police Blotter: May 29 to June 5

Editor’s Note: The following incidents are taken directly from the Verona police blotter, which may not include the full scope of police activity in the area. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

5/29/2015

12:29 PM - Officer Erin McGarrity responded along with the Verona Rescue Squad to a report of a person who fell on Lakeside Avenue. After treatment by the rescue squad, the victim was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital.

5:22 PM - Officer Chris Scheper took a report of Property damage from a Lynwood Road resident. A large tree limb fell causing damage to the house and two vehicles parked in the area. The value of the damage is unknown at this time.

2:33 PM - Officer Bill Frazee took a report of a fraud from a Stocker Road resident. The resident reported that she had filed her tax returns online. She then received a bill for the online services which were supposed to be deducted from her return. She then discovered that a return had already been filed using her social security number. She has been in touch with the IRS and they are investigating the incident.

5/31/2015

2:03 AM - Officer Ed Ruff conducted a motor vehicle stop on Pompton Avenue for an observed violation. While speaking with the operator the officer detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle. The operator was asked to step from the vehicle to perform field sobriety tests. After the tests were completed the operator, Jennifer Braadt of Staten Island was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. She was transported to police headquarters for processing. After processing she was released to a friend.

12:20 PM - Officer Joe Ballanytne took a report of a theft from a Pompton Avenue business. The assistant manager of the business reported that an exhaust fan had been stolen from the roof of the building. Value of the fan is approximately $1,000.

8:33 PM - Officer Chris Scheper responded to a reported fire alarm on Lakeside Avenue. It was determined that the alarm was set off by a water leak in the roof. The value of the damage is unknown at this time.

11:30 PM - Officer Steve Young took a report of property damage from a Valhalla Way resident. The resident reported water flowing from a pipe in her furnace which caused the basement to flood. Amount of damage is unknown at this time.

6/1/15

6:58 AM - Officer John Lecreux took a report of property damage at Brookdale Avenue School. A planter was pushed off a ledge causing damage to the planter and contents. The value of the damage is unknown at this time.

8:51 PM - Officer Thomas Conroy took a report of identity theft form a Hillside Avenue resident. The resident reported several credit cards were opened using his personal information. He was in contact with his bank and was provided with identity theft information.

6/3/2015

11:45 AM - Officer Lecreux took a report of a fraud from a Howard Street resident. The resident reported a prospective employer advanced her money for the salary that she would be paid. After several days the prospective employer asked that she send a portion of the money to a third person via a MoneyGram. The resident did not forward the money and was advised to contact the bank regarding the check she had deposited. She was provided with identity theft information.

7:18 PM - Officer Mike Barone took a report of lost property from a California resident. The resident reported he lost a folder containing personal papers while traveling on a bus to Verona. He was provided with identity theft information.
