Verona Police Blotter: Verona, Cedar Grove Officers Catch Shoplifter
The following information has been provided by the Verona Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

March 15: A Claridge Drive resident told police at 6:35 p.m. two charges on her Bloomingdale’s credit card were fraudulent.
March 16: An Amy Court resident told police they received a threatening phone call from a former tenant at 1:44 p.m. Police contacted the caller and advised him to stop calling. No complaints were made.
March 17: Police responded to a dispute between a Bloomfield Avenue business owner and an employee.
The employer said the dispute started when the employee arrived upset at work and was asked to calm down.
After police spoke to both individuals, the employee was asked to leave and not return to work.

March 18: Frank Avenaud, of Rockaway was stopped by police on Bloomfield Avenue for a traffic violation at 12:59 a.m.
After checking Avenuad’s driver’s information, police found an outstanding $500 warrant from Mendham Township Municipal Court.
Avenaud was arrested and released with a new court date.
March 19: A resident of White Rock Road told after attempting to file her tax return online at 11:57 p.m., the return was rejected because someone had already filed a return with her social security number.

March 20: Verona police and fire department responded at 2:44 p.m. to a Linn Drive apartment because the resident reported smelling gas. After the fire department and PSE&G checked the apartment, no odors or hazards were found.
March 20: Verona police were asked to assist Cedar Grove police at 4:09 p.m. in a search for Robert Smiley, of Montclair, who was wanted for shoplifting from Staples on Route 23 in Cedar Grove.
Smiley was found at the 7-Eleven on Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair with a bag of stolen items from Staples and Amazing Savings on Route 23, in Verona and turned over to the Cedar Grove police.
Amazing Savings also filled a complaint to Verona police against Smiley after the manager verified the items were stolen from the store.
Smiley was given a court date to appear in Verona Municipal Court.
March 21: Police responded to a 5:13 p.m. accident near 799 Bloomfield Ave.
After police checked both drivers’ information, police found one of the involved vehicles was uninsured and the other vehicle was unregistered and the driver did not have a license. Both vehicles were impounded and the drivers were issued summons.
March 22: Police responded at 12:45 a.m. to a burglar alarm on Hillside Avenue.
The homeowner said she heard someone come in through the sliding glass door.
After police checked the house, no damage or fingerprints were found. Police also searched the area to no avail.
