Verona Police Hosting Identity Theft Presentation

Verona Police to host a presentation to help protect residents from the ever-growing crime of identity theft.

Identity theft is an increasingly popular crime in the United States. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, more than 16 million people experienced identity theft in 2012, resulting in $24.7 billion in financial losses.

The Verona Police Department received more than 75 reports of identity theft in 2014, according to NorthJersey.com.

In response, Verona Police will be hosting an event titled “Protecting Yourself in 2015 - How to Avoid Becoming a Victim of Identity Theft, Internet and Telephone Scams.”

The event will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Verona Community Center, located at 880 Bloomfield Ave., and those in attendance will get information on how to avoid becoming another victim and the latest ways people try to steal identities or money, NorthJersey.com said.

Additionally, the presentation will include tips for protecting personal information, protecting the elderly from fraud and abuse, and cyber security.

The event is free to attend, but space is limited. Registration can be done by emailing the Verona Police at info@veronapolice.org.
