Verona Police Warn Of Diversionary Theft Scam

Verona, NJ - Do you know that person at your door, Verona?

The Verona Police Department issued the following advisory on Thursday afternoon:

“Please be aware that we have received information of a diversion theft scam that is back in the area.

“The suspects, who vary in description, often target elderly residents. Most victims report one individual, often wearing a safety vest, who knocks on your door, identifies themself as an employee of the water department and asks to come into the home to check the water.

“The ’worker’ then takes the resident into the basement to check the pipes, while additional individuals enter the home and take items.

“Please remember that ALL Verona employees are issued photo identification that is usually worn on a lanyard and is readily visible. PSE&G, Verizon and Comcast employees also carry company identification, and usually have a company vehicle nearby that clearly shows the company name and logo.

“If you are in doubt, please do NOT let the person into your home. Close the door and call the police. The non-emergency number for Verona is 973-239-5000. In an emergency, dial 911.
