In Verona: Rash of Tax Season IRS Scams Hit Township

Four false returns filed in two days leading up to April 15 deadline.

Where there’s money, there’s scamming.

Verona saw a rash of IRS-related tax scams leading up to the April 15 return deadline, including four over a two-day period.

The basic methodology for each scam was the same... someone filed a false return in the victim’s name.

According to Verona police:

  • On Monday, April 13, Sgt. Dan Greco took a report of identity theft from a Franklin Street resident. The resident reported while attempting to file her tax return she was advised that a return had already been filed using her social security number. She has been in contact with the IRS. The resident was provided with identity theft information.
  • On Monday, April 13, Officer Chris Scheper took a report of identity theft from a Forest Avenue resident. The residents reported while attempting to file their tax return they were advised that a return had already been filed using their social security number. The residents have been in contact with the IRS. The residents were provided with identity theft information.
  • On Monday, April 13, Lt. Chris Kiernan took a report of identity Theft from a Depot Street resident. The resident reported he was notified by the IRS that an unknown person had filed a return using his social security number. The IRS froze the return due to several changes from previous returns. The resident is in contact with the IRS. He was provided with identity theft information.
  • On Tuesday, April 14, Officer Thomas Conroy took a report of identity theft from a Franklin Street resident. The residents reported while attempting to file their tax return they were advised that a return had already been filed using their social security number. The residents have been in contact with the IRS. The residents were provided with identity theft information.
