Today in New Jersey history:
July 7, 1862: President Abraham Lincoln called for “300,000 more” volunteers for three years service to help put down the Rebellion. New Jersey’s quota was five regiments, or around 5,000 men, and included the Eleventh, Twelfth, Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiments.
July 7, 1930: A fireworks factory and adjacent storage buildings in Neptune Township owned by Frank Cimino exploded, killing four people, three of them children, and setting a nearby woodlot afire.
