Today in New Jersey history:
July 17, 1971: Morven, the Stockton family mansion in Princeton, built in 1730 in the Georgian style, was designated a National Historic Landmark. The Stockton family sold the estate to Governor Walter Edge in 1944, with the proviso that he would leave it to the state in his will. Edge transferred ownership to the state in 1954. Morven served as the official New Jersey governor’s residence from 1944 to 1981. It is currently a museum.
July 17, 2013: “Jersey Boys,” the award-winning musical based on the career of Frankie Valli and the “Four Seasons” New Jersey rock and roll group, became the seventeenth longest running show in Broadway history, with 3,183 performances to that date. The show has also been performed in Las Vegas, London, Capetown, South Africa and the Netherlands, as well as in venues across the United States. A film version of “Jersey Boys” opened on June 20, 2014.
