A Plow & a Park

Today in New Jersey history:

June 17, 1797: Charles Newbold of Chesterfield Township in Burlington County patented an improved plow, with iron moldboard, share and landside cast of iron in one piece at Hanover Furnace. In practice, the device did not work out, as conservative local farmers refused to consider it over the traditional wooden plow, some allegedly maintaining that the iron poisoned the ground, and he ceased manufacturing it.

June 17, 1976: Liberty State Park, a 1,200-acre tract adjacent to Jersey City, opened to the public. Among its attractions are a 36-acre natural area of marshes and a two-mile-long waterfront promenade.
