Schelling's three TDs leads Pee Wees into Mountain Valley Championships
Wolverines shut out Phillipsburg 29-0.
Gold Flag
The Watchung Hills Wolverines ended their season against the Colts of Phillipsburg this Sunday. Colin Archbold, Matthew Dahl and John King each had 10-yard runs behind the blocking of Christian Hagel, Buddy Steen and Jeffrey Meslow.
The defense held the Colts to just 8 yards on 10 plays. John King led the team with four flags while Dylan Kelly finished the day with two. Aqili Holmes, Matthew Dahl, Colin Archbold and Jeffrey Meslow each finished with one flag.
Blue Flag
The Wolverines turned in a great end of the season performance. The offense was led by Tyler Marion (2 carries for 55 yards), Martin Howell (2 carries for 20 yards) and Luke Freijomil (2 carries for 25 yards) each scoring a touchdown and John Cerwinski added 50 yards rushing on 3 carries.
On defense, Vincent Freijomil and Martin Howell led the team with 4 flags and 3 flags, respectively.
Junior Flag
The Wolverine offense exploded against the Colts of Phillipsburg behind Donnie Catanese’s two carries for 70 yards and two scores. Ryan Johnson sprinted 30 yards for a score and David Rosenfarb rushed for 50 yards and a score. Tyler Shpunder added 20 yards rushing.
The stalwart defense was led by Travis Jelmert and Chase Miller who each grabbed five flags. Quentin Tao and Joseph Vecchio pulled three flags each while David Hatcher and Ryan Johnson grabbed two.
Mighty Mite
The Watchung Hills Wolverines Mighty Mite team travelled to Phillipsburg on Sunday to take on the Phillipsburg Colts in their season finale. The Wolverines, lead all year by fourth-graders Patrick Stefurak, John Annunziatta, Josh Ramierez, Michael Butrico, Brian Arnold, Justin Ferreira, Jack Dardis, Thomas Dardis, Jack Haiken, KC Boyle and Jack Valenti, came out strong as they overcame a game opening on-side kick to even the score up at the half. The Wolverine points came on a 60-yard touchdown pass from QB John Annunziatta to TE Patrick Stefurak—it was Stefurak's fifth touchdown catch of the season.
The second half turned into a defensive battle as both teams struggled to move the ball. The Colt offense used ball control and short runs up the middle to keep the potent Wolverine offense off of the field. LBs Brian Arnold, Mike Butrico and Josh Ramierez lead the charge in tackling the Colt runners and not allowing the big play and LB Luke Malfetti made the defensive play of the game as he picked off a Colts pass to give Watchung Hills the ball back. The defensive line led by Shane Kelly, Bryce Rooks and Jack Valenti also did a good job of plugging the middle. The combined defensive effort shut out the Colts in the 2nd half.
Offensively in the second half, the Wolverines were limited until the final drive of the game.
Highlight plays included a reverse to Stefurak and a long run by RB Justin Ferreira which set up the Wolverines inside the 10 yard line as time expired.
The Wolverines want to thank all of the players, coaches, team moms and parents for their support of the team this year. We look forward to continued success next year!
Junior Pee Wee
The Wolverine offense got back on track this weekend beating the Philipsburg Colts 21-0.
Jack Taub started off the scoring with a 5-yard plunge to make it 6-0. That was followed by touchdown runs by Chris Clintock and Gavin Defuria. Joe Rica and TJ Pecoraro led the offense with 50 yards a piece. Charlie Everhard also added a 15 yard carry as well. The offensive line paved the way for the backs creating big holes. The blocking was led by Anthony Tomaro, George Rooks, Dave Damore and Chris Shisholu.
The defense had another stellar performance led by a fearsome defensive front of Robbie Saum, Michael Coacher, Joey Rica, Anthony Tomaro and Michael Fornaro. Saum and Fornaro led the way with 3 sacks a piece. The Linebackers were led by Justin Uberoi who intercepted a pass and had a bone crushing hit causing a fumble which was recovered by Charlie Everhard. The secondary of Eric Hoff, Matty Colantuono, Anthony Denave, TJ Pecoraro and Vinny Percario all held the high-powered passing attack in check to preserve the shut out.
Pee Wee
The Watchung Hills Pee Wee team battled with Phillipsburg in the first round of the Mountain Valley Conference playoffs and emerged victorious with a 29-0 win.
Watchung Hills stopped P'burg's opening possession in four plays and proceeded to drive down the field and score behind the power running of Thomas Schelling. The Wolverine defense played tough in the first half and let up two first downs and no points behind the front line of Tyler Jelmert, Gary Gagliotti and Matthew Cardoza.
The second half was a dominant one for Watchung Hills. Schelling scored on a 1-yard run in the first series and added another after he intercepted a pass on 4th and 12 and ran it back 15 yards for his third touchdown of the day. Nick Ugarte added the kick for 2 points. Ryan Trimble recovered the ensuing kick-off and the Wolverines started their last drive on the P'burg 40. Four plays later Nick Ugarte scampered into the end zone on a 10 yard sprint around the left end and added another 2 point kick. Cardoza and Charlie Dardis combined for a sack toward the end of the fourth quarter on a crucial fourth down to seal the win.
