Seriously Injured State Trooper Identified, Drove Off Highway Into Trees On I-78

Breaking: The on-duty state trooper reportedly drove off I-78 into the median and crashed into several trees in Warren on Monday.

WARREN, NJ — A New Jersey State Trooper who is suffering from serious injuries following a crash on Interstate 78 in Warren on Monday has been identified.

On Monday, April 3 at 3:23 p.m., Trooper Jeffrey Almeida, 26, was driving a marked Ford Crown Victoria troop car eastbound on Interstate 78 in Warren Township in the area of milepost 40.8 when a car crash occurred.

The crash involving an Acura sedan, which was driven by Marquis Godfrey, 29, of Newark, caused the troop car to run off of the left side of the roadway, entered the grass, center median and struck several trees, NJ State Police report.

Trooper Almeida was entrapped and had to be extricated from the troop car. He was airlifted to University Medical Center in Newark where he is being treated for serious, but non-life-threatening leg injuries, State Police report.

Godfrey did not report any injuries. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
