Traffic Shift, Lane Closures On I-78 West As Bridge Work Continues In Somerset County

A traffic shift and overnight lane closures are scheduled as bridge replacement work continues on I-78 westbound.

WARREN, NJ — Drivers heading on Interstate 78 West will see overnight lane closures as a bridge replacement project moves into another stage.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Thursday, the left lane on I-78 West is scheduled to close so crews can reposition the construction barrier near the bridge over the Tributary of Dead River, said the New Jersey Department of Transportation(NJDOT).

A second lane will close later in the night so crews can restripe the road and shift traffic.

The change will move traffic from the left lane to the center onto a newly constructed portion of the bridge and create a work zone on the left side, according to the NJDOT.

At least one lane will be maintained overnight, and by 6 a.m. Thursday, all three lanes are scheduled to reopen and be shifted to the right.

The work is part of the $6.1 million federally funded I-78 westbound Bridge over Tributary of Dead River replacement project in Warren Township, Somerset County.

According to the NJDOT, the bridge superstructure and deck will be replaced.

The project also includes guiderail upgrades and will advance in stages using precast deck panels to minimize construction time.

The on-ramp from King George Road southbound onto I-78 westbound remains closed and detoured for the duration of the project.

The ramp from King George Road northbound to I-78 westbound will remain open throughout construction.

Under the posted detour, drivers traveling on King George Road southbound to I-78 westbound are directed to take Valley Road/CR 512 westbound, turn left to stay on Valley Road/CR 512, then turn left onto Martinsville-Liberty Corner Road/CR 525 and take the ramp onto I-78 westbound.

According to NJDOT, all three lanes on I-78 westbound will be maintained during most of the construction, though some lane closures are expected at night or on weekends.

The project is expected to be completed in fall 2026.
