IN SHORT
Freshman left field McKayla Brady singled in a sixth-inning run, and Ashley McKenna scored the second on a wild pitch, but the Warriors’ pitchers were lit up for 14 hits, including four doubles and a home run, and nine earned runs, and fell to the Lions 13-2 Monday at Watchung Hills Regional High School.

After tossing a hitless top of the first inning, starting pitcher Abby Cline suffered a bruise to her pitching hand while batting in the bottom of the frame. After the sophomore, obviously affected by the ailment while pitching the second inning, allowed an unearned run, Cline was removed to start the third inning, and each of her three replacements for the duration allowed multiple runs.

The Warriors’ offense slumbered Monday, managing just two hits during the first five innings, before tallying two runs on three hits in the sixth, and Watchung Hills, which beat North Hunterdon 3-2 on Friday, dropped just its third game of the season.

WARRIOR OF THE GAME
McKayla Brady – The freshman left fielder delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Warriors on the scoreboard. The second run scored on the same play, when the ball was bobbled in center field.

OTHER KEY PERFORMANCES
Jamie Schoenbach (Watchung Hills) – The senior center fielder singled with one out in the sixth inning – the Warriors’ first hit since the second inning – and scored on Brady’s knock. Schoenbach also turned in a pretty sliding catch in shallow center field during the fifth inning to save a run.

Ashley McKenna (Watchung Hills) – The senior designated hitter replaced Cline in the batting order after she departed with an injury and delivered a single in the sixth inning. McKenna came around to score the Warriors’ second run.

THEY SAID IT
“I think we’ll just shake it right off. I think we were due for a rough game. If you look at what we’ve done, we really have played a bunch of good games right from the beginning of the season. I’ve been around this game long enough to know even good teams have bad days.”
– Watchung Hills coach Mike D’Alessandro, after his team’s 13-2 stinker against North Hunterdon on Monday
