According to the Warren Historical Society, parts of the current building were built around 1786 as a homestead for an early family. Its first use as an inn and tavern didn't come about until John Smalley bought it for that purchase in 1804.

From time to time, the inn served as the township's meeting place: the Township Committee met there in 1818, 1831 and 1845. After the Civil War, the inn was also a popular getaway for wealthy New Yorkers...and before the stone chapel was finished the Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church, the inn was home for the church.
