Italian Honey Bee Makes Appearance In Watchung

An Italian honey bee that was saved from a fallen tree last summer returned to Watchung to teach youngsters about these insects.

WATCHUNG, NJ — An Italian honey bee that was saved from a fallen tree last summer returned to Watchung to teach youngsters about these insects.

On May 16, Watchung Library branch hosted a program, Bees Knees and Caterpillar Dreams where kids were able to get up close to the honey bee. The bee was one of the more than 70,000 Italian honey bees saved from a fallen tree.

Along with explaining the lifestyle of bees, Rich Hoffman of the Environmental Education Center, introduced children and their parents to bee predators, including a live Praying Mantis.

Other pollinators, such as butterflies and moths, made an appearance, including a large, very hungry Luna caterpillar.
