Man Wanted for Shooting, Carjacking and Eluding Police in Somerset County Indicted: Prosecutor

The man was later located in South Carolina after taking police on a car chase through Union and Middlesex counties: prosecutor

NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ — A Union County man wanted for a shooting and carjacking in North Plainfield was indicted Wednesday morning, Acting Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson announced.

A Somerset County Grand Jury returned an indictment against Sedean A. McCoy, age 30, of Plainfield with 1st Degree Carjacking, 2nd Degree Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose, 2nd Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, 3rd Degree Aggravated Assault and 2nd Degree Eluding.

On June 24, at approximately 3:14 a.m., a 44-year-old Plainfield victim reported a man, lagter identified as McCoy entered his car while in the convenience store parking lot located on Somerset Street in North Plainfield.

McCoy had a gun and a struggle ensued between the too. During the struggle, the victim was shot in his right thigh, according to police.

The victim was able to escape and McCoy then drove away with his car, according to police,

The victim was transported to an area trauma center, where he was treated and released.

Detectives from the North Plainfield Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit were able to idenitify McCoy as the assialant from video surveillance footage.

McCoy was later spotted on June 30 driving a car in Plainfield. When police tried to pull hm over, he ignored and took officers on a car chase through numerous towns in Union and Middlesex counties. McCoy was able to escape on Route 287.

On Friday, July 8, Marshals assigned to the U.S. Marshal’s Violent Fugitive Task Force, in North Carolina found McCoy at a residence in Henderson, North Carolina.

McCoy was arrested without incident and extradited back to New Jersey.
