Two students from Mount Saint Mary Academy in Watchung have been honored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars for their submissions to the organization’s annual Voice of Democracy contest. Sophomore Rionach McEwen of Scotch Plains and sophomore Jugdip Khokher of Iselin earned second and third places, respectively, for VFW Post 10122 in Scotch Plains. McEwen also earned third place in the Somerset County division of the competition.
Voice of Democracy is a unique contest that requires students to submit audio recordings of their original essays in addition to the written essays themselves. Submissions are judged based on the quality of the written piece, the strength of the overall message, and the impact of the student’s presentation. Each year, the VFW selects a patriotic theme for students to contemplate. This year’s theme was “Why I’m Optimistic About our Nation’s Future.” The students created their essays and recordings as part of their honors course work in American History.
