WATCH: How To Survive an Active Shooter Event in Green Brook
Police offer video on how to increase your chances for surviving an "active shooter" event in a public location or in your workplace.

In light of recent events, especially Southern California, local police departments are sharing a six-minute video with residents on how to increase their chances for surviving an “active shooter” event in a public location or in a workplace.
An “active shooter” is an individual who is actively engaged in shooting or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area. Most active shooters use firearms, but can be any weapon.
In many cases, there is no pattern or method to the selection of victims by an active shooter, and these situations are by their very nature are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Because active shooter situations are often over within a few minutes, many times before law enforcement arrives on the scene, individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to react to such an occurrence.

This six minute video was funded by the Department of Homeland Security Grant Funded Project and produced by the City of Houston’s Mayor’s Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security.
The video shows “active shooter” information in a simple and concise manner to better prepare individuals who might encounter such a situation.
“If you are ever to find yourself in an emergency situation, your survival may very well depend on whether or not you have a plan. This video can be a good training tool to cover simple steps and can help the public think about and plan for such a situation,” police said.
Needless to say, a person must use their own discretion during an active shooter event, and spending the time to prepare is an investment worth making.
