Man, Woman Rescued From Roof During 4-Alarm Fire

The fire started in the basement of King of Delancey deli in Passaic and quickly spread to the rest of the building, authorities said.

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — A man and a woman were rescued from the roof of a two-story building Wednesday morning during a four-alarm fire, authorities said.

The fire at the King of Delancey deli was reported at 5:30 a.m., said Passaic Fire Department Chief Patrick Trentacoast.

Firefighters found a man and a woman stepping out of a second-story window and onto the roof after they arrived minutes after the call came in, Trentacoast said.

They were rescued a few minutes after firefighters arrived, the chief said.

The fire started in the back basement of the King of Delancey deli and spread to the first and second floors, Trentacost said. The fire quickly went to a four-alarm blaze, he said, and more than 80 firefighters fought it.

The fire was brought under control at about 10:40 a.m., Trentacost said.

Minor injuries were reported to several firefighters, the chief said. One was treated, released, and placed off-duty.

The building sustained damage to every floor and is uninhabitable, the chief said. The roof and the back of the first floor partially collapsed, he said.

According to NorthJersey.com, firefighters were not able to turn hoses on the fire until the man and woman were rescued.

Authorities said there were issues with water pressure as they tried to ensure the fire did not spread to adjacent buildings, NorthJersey.com reported.
