African and Tribal Arts and Artifacts on Display at William Paterson University
Exhibit showcases masks, symbols of leadership, sculpture and household items.
A selection of African art and artifacts will be on view in the Ben Shahn Galleries at William Paterson University through March 4 in an exhibit called Objects of Power. Nearly 700 objects were donated to the university for the exhibit.
The objects include ritual objects used in initiation rites, courtship and marriage ceremonies, spirit and ancestor worship and festivals.
"These objects are closely tied to transitional African religious beliefs and the ceremonies that are integral to the African tribal community," said Nancy Einreinhofer, director of the Ben Shahn Galleries.

The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
