Cedar Crest Celebrates International Day of Peace

Inspirational ceremony held on campus to honor the United Nations International Day of Peace

On September 21, the Cedar Crest Retirement community held an inspirational ceremony in the Interfaith Chapel on campus to honor the United Nations International Day of Peace. Every year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21. The day is devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

More than 200 residents attended the event which included music by the Cedar Crest Choral and Harpist Faye Fishman, special readings by residents, prayer for peace by Pastoral Ministries Manager Bert Moore, and a beautiful installation of more than 500 origami paper doves folded by residents and staff. At the end of the ceremony, the Cedar Crest Strummers led audience members in singing songs about peace including “Down by the Riverside” and “This Little Light of Mine.”

Cedar Crest is dedicating 2016 to peace and understanding. Resident May Fisher, who has lived at Cedar Crest for seven years, came up with the idea for the peace initiative on campus and formed a Peace Committee to organize events and activities throughout the year.

Several resident clubs are organizing events to support the project. This past spring, the Cedar Crest Chorale’s performed songs related to peace at their spring concert. The Garden Club collected donations to plant a tree on campus that will be dedicated to peace and understanding. Also, Cedar Crest’s newsletter is publishing essays by residents about peace each month.

“I would like to think the peace initiative is making a difference,” said Fisher. “Let’s hope it rubs off a little bit both here and out in the greater world because we are part of the greater world, even if we think we are just in this smaller community. Each person can make a big change.”
