2 Cops From Wayne Were Involved in Tragic Shooting

WAYNE, NJ — They were on the same call. Two police officers from Wayne just doing their jobs.

Now, one is fighting for his life.

Officer Matt Zarillo, a Wayne native, responded to the weekend shooting of fellow township native Adam Jobbers-Miller, J. Mitchell Haley, the Fort Myers Police Department's public information officer. Both are Fort Myers, Fla. Police officers, police said.

Jobbers-Miller was shot by Winser Desmaret, 29, during a foot pursuit Saturday night, police said. Desmaret was wanted for allegedly stealing a cell phone from a group of kids.

Zarillo and Jobbers-Miller were both hired by the Fort Myers Police Department in 2015.

Zarillo moved to Wayne with his mother and brother from after his mom married now-retired Wayne Police Lt. Michael O'Connor, the Advertiser-News reported. Zarillo's dad died of cancer when he was 10.

O'Connor retired in 2011 after 41 years with the department, NorthJersey.com reported. He could not be reached for comment.

Jobbers-Miller remains hospitalized in "critical, but stable" condition and is "showing positive signs," Fort Myers Police said.

Jobbers-Miller is a former firefighter with P.O.L. Company No. 2. Jobbers-Miller's father, David is a former chief and life member of Co. 2 and his sister Nicole is a long-time member of the Wayne First Aid Squad.

A prayer vigil will be held for Jobbers-Miller at P.O.L. Fire Co. 2 at 970 Route 23 North from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, rain or shine.

As of Thursday morning, more than $46,000 has been donated to an online fundraiser organized Fort Myers police for Jobbers-Miller's family.
