Devils Coach, Player Helping Wayne Man Fight ALS

Gary Ragusa, a lifelong Wayne resident, was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease last year.

Gary Ragusa is getting an assist from two New Jersey Devils in the battle against Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Ragusa, a lifelong Wayne resident and a big hockey fan, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) last February. Residents and Ragusa’s friends have formed Team Goose to try and help the father and his family, including his two sons, Gary, who plays hockey at Wayne Valley High School, and Ryan.

A special Team Goose Night will be held at the Brownstone in Paterson Feb. 1. New Jersey Devils head coach John Hymes and forward Kyle Palmieri, along with entertainer Uncle Floyd will be there. A tricky tray and auction will be held and dinner will be served. Tickets cost $65.

MIchael Riga, Ragusa’s friend and co-worker started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to help Ragusa and his family. Ragusa works for the township’s Water Department.

Riga wanted to raise $15,000. To date, more than $19,500 has been donated. The family is using the money to pay for experimental medical treatments that are not covered by insurance and home modifications needed to help Ragusa as the disease progresses.
