The community is invited to start off the High Holidays on Saturday, September 24 at 9:00 pm with Shomrei Torah’s special Selichot service featuring an exceptional documentary entitled “Praying in Her Own Voice.” Directed by Yael Katzir, this powerful film documents the courageous struggle of the “Women of the Wall” movement, which seeks to change current rules that prevent women from praying aloud, wearing a talit, or reading from the Torah at the Western Wall. Their quest raises many thought-provoking issues concerning women’s rights, civil disobedience, and the influence of the ultra-Orthodox in Israel. The film will be followed by a discussion and a dessert reception.
Selichot services will begin at approximately 11:00 pm. “Selichot” are special prayers for forgiveness that begin before and continue during the Jewish High Holidays. As is customary, the first Selichot prayers are said late at night, before going home to sleep.
There is no charge for the evening and non-members are welcome.
