Ex-Wayne Man, Florida Police Officer Dies After Being Shot

Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller, formerly of Wayne, died a week after being shot while on a call at a gas station in Florida.

WAYNE, NJ — Former township resident and Fort Myers Police Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller died July 28, a week after he was shot in the line of duty, the Fort Myers Police Department said.

"It is with a heavy heart that we inform our community that Fort Myers Police Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller has passed away as a result of the injuries sustained on Saturday, July 21," said Mitch Haley, the Florida department's public information officer. "We ask that you continue to pray for Officer Jobbers-Miller’s family, friends and our entire Fort Myers Police Department family."

Jobbers-Miller was a Wayne Valley High School alumnus and a former firefighter with P.O.L. Company No. 2. His father, David is a former chief and life member of Co. 2 and his sister, Nicole, is a long-time member of the Wayne First Aid Squad.

Jobbers-Miller was shot by Winser Desmaret, 29, during a foot pursuit July 21, police said. He was in critical condition since Saturday. Desmaret was wanted for allegedly stealing a cell phone from a group of kids.

Desmaret was charged with eight felonies, including first-degree attempted murder, upon his release from the hospital, Fort Myers Police Chief Derrick Diggs. It is unknown if any of the charges would be changed or upgraded following Jobbers-Miller's death.

"It’s a very low time right now for our city and for the Miller family," Mayor Randall Henderson told USA Today. "We need to stay intensely focused on the family and their support. This will serve as a reminder to us all – first responders, law enforcement officers face these challenges every day. We love them and respect them and at this time we embrace all of them."

A candlelight vigil was held at Fire Co. 2 Friday in Jobbers-Miller's honor. Jobbers-Miller joined the fire department in 2009, USA Today reported.

"It was an honor being his chief and to watch him grow into such a devoted, dedicated firefighter,” Fire Co. 2 Chief John Gabriel said in the USA Today report.

Fort Myers Police detectives are investigating the shooting.

More than $57,300 has been donated to an online fundraiser organized Fort Myers police for Jobbers-Miller's family.

A Wayne native responded to the same call that Jobbers-Miller did. Officer Matt Zarillo was hired by the Fort Myers Police Department the same year Jobbers-Miller was, 2015.
