Flash Flood Watch In Passaic County Extends To 10 a.m. Tuesday

Though most of New Jersey is under a watch until early Tuesday morning, five counties will face an extended one, including Passaic.

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — The National Weather Service has issued a flash food watch from 2 p.m. on Monday until 10 a.m. on Tuesday for five New Jersey counties, including Passaic.

Much of the state is under a watch until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, but only Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Essex and Union Counties will face the extended timeline. Read more: Severe Thunderstorms, Flash Flood Watch Issued In Parts Of NJ

The Hudson County Office of Emergency Management said Monday that "the best chance of strong storms is north of Interstate 195 with the weather service noting in its morning forecast discussion that the heaviest rain could fall overnight." NWS officials also said that the "greatest risk of flash flooding exists in areas that received heavy rain late last week."

The storm could also bring damaging wind, with gusts that could exceed 58 mph. Those winds have the potential to damage trees and power lines, possibly causing scattered power outages.

A warm front is to blame for the rain in the area, but the amount of rain also hinges on the movement of that front, according to the NWS. If the front sinks south quickly, rainfall could be less than the 1 to 3 inches projected, but if it holds position over the area, showers and storms will likely stay longer, leading to a greater chance of "significant rain and flash flooding."
