Islamic Organization Helps Fight Childhood Hunger In Wayne

Islamic Relief USA awarded a grant to the Women and Families Ascending Association.

WAYNE, NJ — A nonprofit Islamic organization is helping a township organization feed kids this summer.

Islamic Relief USA, a humanitarian and advocacy nonprofit has awarded a grant to Women and Families Ascending Association (WFAA), a group that, among other things, works to end domestic abuse and empower people, especially single mothers, to help their families.

The grant will help WFAA provide low-income families with food throughout the summer, when children do have access to free breakfast and lunch at school.

More than 22 million children receive free or reduced-price lunches during the school year through the National School Lunch Program. However, only one of those six kids participated in the summer meals program.

"There are so many children receiving at least one meal during the school year. We continue that service during the summer," said Naeem Muhammad, U.S. programs manager for Islamic Relief USA. "These grants, in coordination with the sites of the program, make it possible to continue providing nutritious meals to those kids during their summer vacations, and they also provide communities some peace of mind. We are committed to continuing this program in the future."
