Mayor: Police Officers Are Our First Line Of Defense

Mayor Vergano: We offer prayers for the families of the slain officers and those who were also injured in the brutal Dallas attack.

Editor's note: The following letter was first published on the Wayne Township website Sunday.

Dear Residents,

Last week we watched in horror as five members of the Dallas Police Department were killed by a crazed gunman shooting with the sole purpose of murdering police officers. I am sure that we all reacted the same way, in disbelief that this unimaginable act had taken place. We offer prayers for the families of the slain officers and those officers that were also injured in the brutal attack.

We wonder how a travesty like this can actually occur. Have we forgotten that the police officer is our first line of defense that protects us, our homes and businesses and our precious families every day of the year? Have we forgotten that the police officer is the first person to respond and assist us in our time of need? Car accidents, burning buildings, attending to the sick and injured 24 hours a day, have we really forgotten?

I have had the privilege of serving as mayor for nine years now and I could not be prouder of the fine efforts of the 114 men and women who proudly serve as officers of the Wayne Township Police Department. I worry each and every day that they will be safe during their tour of duty and be able to return home to their families at the end of shift. Law enforcement officers across our nation should be thanked for their dedication and professionalism and not be the targets of a crazed sniper.

During this time of national reflection, I ask you to join with me and keep in your thoughts and prayers the brave men and women who proudly wear the badge of the Wayne Township Police Department.

Respectfully,

Christopher P. Vergano
Mayor
