NJ Transit Increasing Availability At Some Port Authority Gates

Realigning of gates is part of NJ Transit strategy to improve bus riders' commutes.

NJ Transit is reshuffling gate assignments at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan beginning Sept. 3 as part of an plan to improve the quality of riders' commutes.

Twelve bus routes will have new departure gate assignments, especially during afternoon peak riding hours. The adjustments are designed to reduce waiting times and shorten lines at the terminal.

It is the second gate realignment in a year. In September 2015, the Port Authority changed gates at the terminal for NJ Transit and Coach USA users.

“The bottom line for our customers is that they want a safe, convenient and efficient experience through the terminal," said Dennis Martin, NJ Transit's interim executive director. "By thinking outside the box and challenging the status quo, I think we are continuing to set the bar higher of what can be achieved with the available resources.”

NJ Transit will have customer service representatives in the bus terminal next week and the following week informing customers of the new departure locations.

The Port Authority is in the middle of creating a new bus terminal, but both New York and New Jersey politicians have been fighting over where exactly it should go.
