NJ Transit Police Working With Law Enforcement To Protect Riders

Regular, system-wide service will continue as 'circumstances permit,' the agency said.

Incidents of suspicious packages in Paterson, Clifton, and throughout North Jersey and the recent bombings have prompted an increased response from NJ Transit in trying to keep light rail and bus riders safe.

The NJ Transit Police Department is "working closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement to protect our customers, employees, and infrastructure throughout New Jersey," said Jennifer Nelson, NJ Transit's director of media relations.

NJ Transit's management has been monitoring the events of the last 24 hours, Nelson said, and is "focused on providing a safe commute" for residents.

Police throughout Bergen County, including Mahwah and Ramsey, have increased patrols at NJ Transit stations in those municipalities.

Regular system-wide service will continue as circumstances permit, Nelson said.

The Port Authority Police Department is stepping up patrols at Hudson River crossings and New York City area airports in the wake of multiple bomb-related incidents, the agency said Monday.

Ahmad Rahami, a naturalized Afghanistan citizen who is suspected in bombings in New Jersey and New York, was caught Monday, according to authorities.

A possible pipe bomb explosion in the boardwalk area of Seaside Park Saturday forced the evacuation of a charity 5K race, authorities said.

An explosion Saturday night that law enforcement sources said was caused by an intentionally detonated improvised device in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan sent shrapnel flying into pedestrians, injuring at least 29 people.

On Sunday evening, five explosive devices were found in a backpack at a train station in Elizabeth. The devices were in the process of being made safe when they exploded, according to sources who say they appeared to have been similar to the devices discovered in Seaside on Saturday.

Rahami was taken into custody by police in Linden after he was wounded in a shootout that left two city officers injured, according to Union County officials.
