'Pedals,' Injured Bipedal Walking Bear Is Alive And Well, Report Says

The bear, who walks on 2 legs, was recently spotted in North Jersey and appeared to be in good health, having survived the recent bear hunt.

“Pedals,” an injured walking bear who has become well-known for walking on two legs, was seen in West Milford recently, having survived the recent bear hunt, state officials said.

The bear was seen on Dec. 21, the state Division of Fish and Wildlife confirmed to NJ.com Monday afternoon.

Spokesman Lawrence Hajna said the agency received a call Dec. 21 from someone who saw the bear, who said the bear ”looked healthy,” and estimated that he weighed about 350 pounds, the report stated.

Hajna said that the sighting is a “really encouraging” regarding the bear being able to survive the winter.

Because the bear has not been seen for some time indicates that he has been out in the woods foraging for food, Hajna said, and that he may be getting ready to den up for the winter, NJ.com reported.

There was concern that Pedals would not survive the recent bear hunt held in North Jersey recently, but he was not one of the 510 bears killed during the 10-day long hunt.
