VR Tech Allows Wayne Students To Dissect Dinosaurs

The new STEM lab at Schuyler-Colfax Middle School allows teachers to prepare lessons they wouldn't normally be able to.

WAYNE, NJ — Soon, dissecting a dinosaur could be a standard lesson at Schuyler-Colfax Middle School.

The school's new ZSPACE virtual reality lab is one part of the school's STEM Alley that debuted at the this school year.

The lab was built after classrooms and other parts of the school were damaged when a pipe burst during a nor'easter in January. The leak lasted an entire weekend.

The school paid for the lab using insurance money from the accident, said Superintendent Mark Toback.

Teachers have been trained to use the 14 units to support their lesson plans, which could include things like dissecting dinosaurs. The system and training cost $70,000.

"The virtual reality lab has many applications depending on the software that is purchased," Toback said. "In our case, much of what can be done is heavily connected to the sciences, technology, engineering, and math, which is why the lab is included in STEM Alley."
