Wayne Cop Hit By Postal Truck Still In Hospital
Officer Sean Mitchell is 'anxious' to return home, police say.

Officer Sean Mitchell is still in the hospital and should be home soon following being hit by a postal truck Saturday.
Mitchell was riding his bike on Demarest Drive Saturday morning when the truck’s driver, Edward Gomez-Almonte, made a left turn out of a driveway and hit Mitchell, police said.
Mitchell tried to stop, but he was hit and thrown off his bike and into the air. He landed face down on the pavement.

“He is talking and his spirits are strong,” said Capt. Laurence Martin. “He’s is anxious to return home.”
The doctors are waiting for some of Mitchell’s readings to stabilize, which they anticipate should be “very soon” and then he’ll be released,” Martin said.
Mitchell will be placed on modified assignment when he returns to work, which is standard procedure whenever an officer comes back from being injured.
Gomez-Almonte was charged with careless driving.
Mitchell, a 16-year veteran with the department, was training for a multiple sclerosis charity bike race, an annual event he participates in, Martin said. He also rides in the Police Unity Tour to Washington, D.C. every year.
