Wayne Penguin Pace Returns Saturday

The 5K run takes people around Packanack Lake. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Wayne Interfaith Network food pantry.

WAYNE, NJ — Perhaps the coldest fitness event in town returns Saturday.

The 5-kilometer Penguin Pace will take participants around Packanack Lake. Organizers want the race to help keep people active during the winter.

A portion of proceeds from the race will be donated to the Wayne Interfaith Network food pantry.

The race was first held last year and 230 people registered to participate. A larger turnout is anticipated this year

"Last year, we had a tremendous turnout," said Robert Barwick, one of the race's organizers. "We are proud to be able to use the Penguin Pace as an opportunity to help the Wayne Interfaith Network."

Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. Saturday. The race starts at 9 a.m. at Packanack Lake Community Church, 120 Lake Drive East.

There will be an awards ceremony, prize drawings and a hot cocoa party after the race.

Registration costs $30 before Saturday and $35 on Saturday.
