Primary Day is when voters choose who will represent the Democratic or Republican parties in November for state legislature, local races, county commissioner seats, and school boards.
All 40 of New Jersey’s legislative districts have elections this year for state Senate and General Assembly seats. Democrats have a 46-34 advantage in the Assembly and a 25-15 margin in the Senate, but control won’t be decided until November.
The primary races in Wayne and in the 40th legislative district were fairly straightforward, being uncontested – with only one candidate listed for each party, in each position.
Other New Jersey voters had to choose between candidates to see who will be on the ticket Nov. 7, such as in the 27th district where two Democrats have a showdown for a spot on the ballot to represent several Essex County communities and Clifton in Passaic County.
Current senators Nina Gill (D-NJ-34) and Dick Codey were drawn into the contest after redistricting left Gill’s hometown of Montclair inside the district held by former governor Codey.
Another closely-watched primary is in South Jersey, where Republican Ed Durr (R-NJ-3) looks to hold on to his Senate seat in the 3rd legislative district. Durr, a trucker by trade, shocked many across the state when he unseated former Senate president Steve Sweeney in 2021. Now, he faces a former running mate in Beth Sawyer, a real estate broker.
