Wayne Woman Helps Save Organ Recipients' Lives

Helen LaCarrubba performs DNA testing to match up donated organs with people in need.

WAYNE, NJ — Saving lives is what Helen LaCarrubba does.

LaCarrubba, a Wayne resident, works as a molecular specialist for NJ Sharing Network, a nonprofit organ procurement organization. She performs DNA testing as part of the process of matching organ donors and recipients. She has been a molecular specialist since 2008.

LaCarrubba often sees the same names repeatedly, testing – and hoping – until they find a match.

“In all of the time she has worked with us, she continues to inspire others with her drive towards the advancement of our life-saving work," said Dr. Prakash Rao, director of Transplant Laboratory and vice president of Diagnostics and Research Operations of the Sharing Network.

Others agree.

Donna King, senior laboratory supervisor, who started just after the organization opened in 1987, has worked directly with LaCarrubba since she came on board 21 years ago.

“Helen thrives in her role as a molecular specialist and encourages those around her,” said King. “In such a specialized field, it is not easy to find someone who can do the work that’s needed, and we are continuously thankful to have Helen on our team.”
