The man lost consciousness at the wheel and crashed into a vehicle on the other side of the road, authorities said.

GLASSBORO, NJ — An intoxicated driver died after losing consciousness at the wheel and causing a crash that injured two others Sunday night in Gloucester County, authorities said.

It happened around 11:10 p.m. on Mullica Hill Road in Glassboro.

John Bessel was driving east when his car crossed over the center line and struck a westbound Toyota, police said.

Bessell, 27, temporarily lost consciousness because of suspected illegal drug use and woke up in the opposite lane of travel, according to law enforcement.

Bessel's car — a white, two-door 2008 Mazda — skidded sideways and hit a utility pole, which snapped in half, authorities said. The Wilmington, Delaware, resident was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Toyota driver and a passenger in Bessel's vehicle were injured and brought to Cooper University Hospital, police said. Their conditions weren't immediately clear as of this writing.

Mullica Hill Road, also known as Route 322, was closed for several hours.

The pole damage caused a power outage, but power has since been restored in the area.

The crash remains under investigation. Witnesses and anyone with footage in the area around Campus Crossings that may have captured the crash can contact Glassboro Police Ptl. Tim Cain at tcain@glassboropd.org.
