2012 Senior League Eastern Regional: Comebacks and Weather Delays

Rhode Island, Maryland and Pennsylvania all won Sunday.

From Senior League's Mike Hirschman:

Ron Gaynor’s single over the left fielder’s head scored a pair of runs and gave Johnston, RI, a 7-6 walkoff win over Orange, CT, in an elimination bracket game Sunday afternoon at the 2012 Senior League Baseball Eastern Regional.

Johnston scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to erase a 6-3 deficit and earn a spot in a Monday elimination bracket game against South Vineland, NJ, at 2 p.m.

An error and a walk got the inning started for Johnston, followed by a single by James Picchi to load the bases. Jarrod Podmaska’s infield single plated a run to make it 6-4. After a strikeout, a wild pitch scored Ryan McKeon to cut it to 6-5. A walk reloaded the bases for Gaynor, who lined an 0-2 pitch down towards the left field corner, over the outfielder’s head.

Orange, which only managed three hits in the game, had regained the lead with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings. A pair of bases loaded walks gave Orange a 4-3 lead in the fifth and a sac fly by Zach Chamberlain and a squeeze bunt by Max Hurwitz extended the lead to 6-3.

Ryan McKeon earned the win for Johnston, pitching the final 2-1/3 innings in relief.

Upper Moreland, PA, pushed across seven runs in a fourth inning that took more than four hours to play on its way to a 10-4 win over Naamans Little League of Wilmington, DE in a winner’s bracket game Sunday night at the 2012 Senior League Baseball Eastern Regional.

The decisive inning was delayed twice be weather—a nearly three-hour delay for rain and a second delay shortly afterward for lightning that lasted 51 minutes.

Charlie Hooker, Tommy Robinson and Jason White each had two hits to pace a 12-hit attack for Upper Moreland. Hooker, who scored twice and drove in three runs, hurled three innings of no-hit relief, as well. Robinson earned the win, pitching the first three innings.

Hooker’s three RBI came on a bases clearing double to left, the big blow in the seven-run fourth.

Sam Mattern slammed a two-run homer for Naamans in the fourth.

Upper Moreland will face either West Deptford or Auburn, MA, in Tuesday’s winner’s bracket final.

Naamans will face an opponent to be determined in an elimination game Monday night at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Chris Bramble was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored to pace a 13-hit attack as Talbot, MD, eliminated Scarborough, ME, 11-3, Sunday afternoon at the 2012 Senior League Baseball Eastern Regional.

Talbot scored six runs in the fifth to break open a tight game and earn a spot in a Monday elimination game against Stony Point, NY. That game will start at 11:30 a.m.

Riley Halterman hurled 3-1/3 innings of strong relief to earn the win for Talbot. He scattered four hits and allowed just an unearned run in relief of starter Dylan Rabbitt, who struggled with control in the first frame before being lifted.

Scarborough hung around for a while, scoring a run without a hit in the first inning and then scoring on an error in the fourth to cut the margin to 4-2. But Talbot scored six times in the fifth, including back-to-back hit by pitches with two strikes on the batter that forced in runs.
