Driver IDed In Fatal Crash That Flung Car Into Air In South Jersey: PD

The vehicle struck an embankment, sending it into the air before it severed a pole, authorities said.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — A man was killed in a crash that flung him from his airborne car early Tuesday in Washington Township, officials said.

Police identified Christian C. Benyard, 34, of Sewell as the driver killed in the one-car crash, which happened just before 2:30 a.m. on Pitman Downer Road.

Benyard was driving northbound toward Chapel Heights Road when his vehicle left the roadway and hit an embankment, police said. The impact sent Benyard's vehicle into the air before it struck and severed a utility pole.

The driver was ejected from his vehicle during the crash. Despite efforts from emergency services, Benyard was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pitman Downer Road was closed for about four hours as officials examined the scene.
