Eastern Regional Recap: NY, PA Move On

After eliminating West Deptford, Pennsylvania took down Connecticut to remain alve in the Eastern Regional at Union Field.

After eliminating host West Deptford, Pennsylvania wasted no time getting back to work.

The team avoided elimination for the second time on Monday with an 11-1 win over Connecticut at the Senior League Baseball Eastern Regional at Union Field.

Mike Carey allowed just two hits over six innings and got plenty of support to earn the win. He struck out six and was part of a prolific offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

Bart Chupka led the offense with two hits and three RBIs, while Nick O’Brien and Matt Kimas each delivered two hits each for Pennsylvania, which put the game out of reach with a five-run fifth.

Pennsylvania will face New York in another elimination game Tuesday at 5 p.m. New York defeated Delaware, 6-5, in Monday’s nightcap.

Delaware took a shot late, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning, but its comeback fell short as it left the tying and winning runs on base as New York came away with a nail-biting victory.

New York appeared to have the game in hand as it scored five runs in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. However, Delaware scored a run in the sixth to cut the deficit to three, and Brett McGray’s RBI single made it 6-4 in the seventh. After a blown squeeze attempt, Kyle Guesfeird delivered an RBI single to center to bring his team within a run.

But Tyler Ramos got Cory McGuinness to bounce out to short to end the rally and the game.

The winner of New York and Pennsylvania will advance to face the loser of today’s winner’s bracket final between Maryland and Massachusetts.

In Monday’s early action, Pennsylvania knocked out West Deptford, 3-1, and New York took down Rhode Island in a 10-9 shootout that saw Rhode Island rally from an 8-0 deficit, only to fall short.
