WHEN: Saturday October 10, 2015 10am – 3:00

WHERE: New Street Park, Glassboro, NJ

DETAILS: This is the 20th anniversary of the Glassboro Unity Day. A family event that brings the entire community together to provide community awareness; family activity, food, entertainment and fun.

Unity Day started 20 years ago by the Glassboro School System led by then Superintendent Nick Mitcho. Mr. Mitcho recognized the need for the community to come together after a tragic incident involving a police officer and a young black male. Twenty years later, communities still have a great concern over the tension between the African American Community and Law Enforcement. Sean Dalton, County Prosecutor said, Unity Day is a great opportunity for law enforcement and first responders to engage with residents, especially young people in strengthening this important bond with the Glassboro community. My thanks to Glassboro Police Department, Boys and Girl Club of Gloucester County and all the organizers of this great event.

The Glassboro community is coming together on Saturday October 10, 2015 as it has for the past 20 years. Unity Day has found a permanent home at New Street Park. The park provides an opportunity to expand the activities to include the entire community. This year a new Softball Tournament and a “Kids & Cops” kickball game is included in the day’s activities. A pre-event Bike Ride is organized at the beginning of the Gloucester County Bike Path on Delsea Dr. just south of Awalt Avenue in Glassboro. The bike ride is spearheaded by Councilwoman, Anna Miller a member of the planning committee. My friends fellow cycling members from the Bike and Blazers Bike Club will lead families and friend on a bike ride ending at New Street Park, said Anna Miller. The event starts off with Mayor, Leo McCabe opening the ceremony at 10am. Mykah Hutton, Glassboro High School student will sing the national Anthem. The first demonstration of the day is conducted by the Glassboro K9 Unit, followed by the games, bounce houses, and live entertainment. Over 50 vendors representing a variety of businesses and community group are on hand, along with local food vendors including Glassboro’s PB’s Diner and Steve’s Grilled Cheese.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Gloucester County Executive Director Robert Taylor, helps lead the planning of this event with a team of community volunteers. We have members of this committee from all aspects of the community. We encourage more people to get involved in the planning and conducting of this event. This is a nice community event. The Boys & Girls Club is involved because we have a mission to improve the lives of the children and families, said Taylor.
